Shoulder Pain & Rotator Cuff Injuries

A painful overhead reach may come from a rotator cuff tear, labral injury, unstable joint, frozen shoulder or cervical nerve irritation. Similar symptoms can have very different causes.

COMMON CAUSES & INJURIES

Know what could be behind your symptoms.

Partial and complete tears, overuse, degeneration and structural changes are not managed the same way. The exam guides what comes next.

Rotator cuff damage

Tendinosis and partial- versus full-thickness supraspinatus, infraspinatus or subscapularis tears may cause weakness, night pain or difficulty lifting.

Labral & biceps injuries

SLAP lesions, other labral tears and long-head biceps problems can follow throwing, lifting or traction injuries.

Instability & trauma

Dislocations, recurrent subluxation, Bankart-type injuries, AC sprains and post-fracture stiffness need a stability-focused assessment.

Stiffness & degeneration

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), osteoarthritis, scapular movement problems and recovery after cuff repair or shoulder replacement.

WHY PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION?

Care focused on how you function.

A PM&R physician evaluates shoulder motion and strength together with neck function, scapular mechanics and activity demands. That can help distinguish tendon pain from nerve-related symptoms, guide targeted therapy and recovery after surgery, and identify when imaging or orthopedic surgical review is appropriate.

From injury to recovery

  • Sports. Baseball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and overhead work.
  • Trauma & anatomy. Falls, dislocations, repetitive instability and changes in shoulder mechanics.
  • After surgery. Motion, strength and safe return to activity following rotator cuff repair or arthroplasty.

When further evaluation matters: A new dislocation, major deformity, loss of shoulder movement after trauma, or sudden inability to lift the arm requires prompt medical assessment.
