Disc & nerve-root irritation
Cervical disc protrusion or herniation can irritate a nerve root, causing arm pain, tingling or weakness (radiculopathy).

Neck pain after a collision is different from an irritated cervical nerve root or spinal cord compression. PM&R looks at the neck, shoulder girdle and neurologic exam to clarify what needs attention.

Partial and complete tears, overuse, degeneration and structural changes are not managed the same way. The exam guides what comes next.
Cervical disc protrusion or herniation can irritate a nerve root, causing arm pain, tingling or weakness (radiculopathy).
Acceleration/deceleration trauma, strains, trigger points and postural overload may involve neck muscles and surrounding tissues.
Cervical spondylosis, facet-related pain and foraminal narrowing can cause localized pain or referred symptoms.
Cervical canal narrowing, instability or deformity may affect balance, hand coordination or neurologic function; recovery after cervical surgery is individualized.
WHY PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION?
PM&R combines a neurologic and musculoskeletal examination with shoulder assessment and review of imaging when indicated. Your physician can help distinguish muscular/facet symptoms from nerve-root problems, structure safe rehab and coordinate with spine specialists when neurologic risk is present.
