Neck Pain & Cervical Nerve Problems

Neck pain after a collision is different from an irritated cervical nerve root or spinal cord compression. PM&R looks at the neck, shoulder girdle and neurologic exam to clarify what needs attention.

COMMON CAUSES & INJURIES

Know what could be behind your symptoms.

Partial and complete tears, overuse, degeneration and structural changes are not managed the same way. The exam guides what comes next.

Disc & nerve-root irritation

Cervical disc protrusion or herniation can irritate a nerve root, causing arm pain, tingling or weakness (radiculopathy).

Whiplash & muscle injury

Acceleration/deceleration trauma, strains, trigger points and postural overload may involve neck muscles and surrounding tissues.

Facet joints & degeneration

Cervical spondylosis, facet-related pain and foraminal narrowing can cause localized pain or referred symptoms.

Stenosis & alignment

Cervical canal narrowing, instability or deformity may affect balance, hand coordination or neurologic function; recovery after cervical surgery is individualized.

WHY PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION?

Care focused on how you function.

PM&R combines a neurologic and musculoskeletal examination with shoulder assessment and review of imaging when indicated. Your physician can help distinguish muscular/facet symptoms from nerve-root problems, structure safe rehab and coordinate with spine specialists when neurologic risk is present.

From injury to recovery

  • Sports. Wrestling, cycling, overhead lifting and repetitive posture demands.
  • Trauma & anatomy. Motor vehicle collisions, falls, prior neck injury and structural narrowing.
  • After surgery. Gradual restoration of safe mobility and conditioning after cervical procedures.

When further evaluation matters: New or worsening arm weakness, trouble walking or coordinating the hands, or bowel/bladder changes with spinal symptoms requires urgent assessment.
