Knee Pain & Sports Injuries

A torn meniscus is different from an ACL injury, kneecap tracking problem or arthritis. The right evaluation looks at how the injury happened, what feels unstable, and what is limiting your movement.

COMMON CAUSES & INJURIES

Know what could be behind your symptoms.

Partial and complete tears, overuse, degeneration and structural changes are not managed the same way. The exam guides what comes next.

Meniscus tears

Twisting injuries can cause radial, flap, horizontal or bucket-handle tears. Painful catching, swelling or true locking help determine urgency.

Ligament injuries

ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL sprains or tears can follow cutting sports, skiing, collisions or falls. Instability matters as much as pain.

Tendons & kneecap

Patellar or quadriceps tendinopathy and partial tears, patellofemoral pain, and kneecap maltracking may disrupt stairs, squats or running.

Arthritis & alignment

Cartilage wear, osteoarthritis, bowleg/knock-knee alignment and stiffness after fractures or knee replacement can change how the joint loads.

WHY PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION?

Care focused on how you function.

PM&R connects the exam to your goals: walking without limping, returning to sport, or regaining strength after an ACL repair or joint replacement. Your physiatrist can assess gait, strength, stability, range of motion and relevant imaging; guide rehabilitation and nonoperative options; and coordinate with orthopedics when a repair or reconstruction needs consideration.

From injury to recovery

  • Sports. Pivoting, basketball, soccer, football, running and skiing injuries.
  • Trauma & anatomy. Falls, direct blows, kneecap tracking disorders and altered limb alignment.
  • After surgery. Return-to-activity planning after meniscal repair, ligament reconstruction or knee replacement.

When further evaluation matters: A locked knee, inability to bear weight after injury, major new instability or suspected complete tendon rupture needs prompt evaluation; some injuries require orthopedic or emergency care.
