Finger tendon tears
Mallet finger involves the terminal extensor tendon; jersey finger involves a flexor tendon. Partial or complete tears can limit bending or straightening.

Thumb instability, a bent fingertip, numbness and painful clicking may point to ligament, tendon, joint or nerve problems. Small injuries can have a big effect on grip and fine motor control.

Partial and complete tears, overuse, degeneration and structural changes are not managed the same way. The exam guides what comes next.

Skier’s thumb (thumb UCL injury), volar-plate injuries, scapholunate ligament problems and TFCC injuries may follow falls or twisting.
Carpal tunnel symptoms, ulnar nerve irritation, trigger finger and De Quervain tendinopathy can impair gripping and dexterity.
Thumb-base arthritis, joint subluxation, post-traumatic stiffness and deformity after fractures or tendon repairs may alter hand mechanics.
WHY PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION?
A PM&R clinician can help identify whether pain, weakness or numbness is driven by a joint, tendon or peripheral nerve problem. Treatment planning may involve splinting, occupational/hand therapy, ergonomic changes and appropriate referral; a specialist hand surgeon is important for some acute tendon and unstable ligament injuries.
