Elbow Pain & Tendon Injuries

Tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, a throwing ligament injury and a biceps tendon tear are not interchangeable. The location of pain, strength change and injury mechanism determine what to evaluate.

COMMON CAUSES & INJURIES

Know what could be behind your symptoms.

Partial and complete tears, overuse, degeneration and structural changes are not managed the same way. The exam guides what comes next.

Tennis & golfer’s elbow

Lateral and medial epicondylitis involve overloaded tendon origins, often from gripping, racquet sports, lifting or repetitive work.

Ligament sprains & tears

Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries—especially in throwing athletes—and collateral ligament damage after elbow dislocation affect stability.

Biceps & triceps tears

Partial or complete distal biceps or triceps ruptures may cause a pop, bruising and loss of forearm rotation or elbow strength.

Nerve irritation & stiffness

Cubital tunnel syndrome can cause ring/small-finger tingling; fractures and surgery can leave stiffness or altered motion.

WHY PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION?

Care focused on how you function.

A PM&R examination can differentiate tendon overload from nerve involvement and joint instability, then connect the findings to grip, lifting, throwing and daily function. Rehabilitation, activity modification and selected nonsurgical options may help, while suspected major tendon or ligament tears require surgical evaluation.

From injury to recovery

  • Sports. Baseball pitching, golf, tennis, climbing and strength training.
  • Trauma & anatomy. Elbow dislocation, a sudden lifting injury or post-fracture motion loss.
  • After surgery. Graded return to gripping, throwing and lifting after tendon or ligament procedures.

When further evaluation matters: A sudden pop with visible deformity or major weakness, new dislocation, or progressive hand weakness after injury warrants prompt assessment.
