Disc problems & sciatica
Lumbar disc bulges or herniations may cause nerve-root pain, numbness or weakness. A disc can also be painful without causing true sciatica.
SPORTS INJURIES · REHABILITATION · TROY
Pain across the lower back is not always a disc problem. Disc injuries, spinal stenosis, joint pain, alignment differences and muscle or pelvic conditions may need different care plans.

Partial and complete tears, overuse, degeneration and structural changes are not managed the same way. The exam guides what comes next.
Lumbar disc bulges or herniations may cause nerve-root pain, numbness or weakness. A disc can also be painful without causing true sciatica.
Lumbar spinal stenosis may cause walking-related leg symptoms that improve with sitting or bending forward.
Spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, facet arthritis and sacroiliac-region pain can affect balance, load distribution and function.
Muscle strains, lifting injuries, compression fractures and deconditioning after surgery each call for a different assessment.
WHY PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION?
A physiatrist assesses movement, strength, neurologic symptoms, activity demands and prior imaging to identify possible pain generators. PM&R coordinates rehabilitation and nonsurgical treatment plans and can recognize situations requiring spine-surgery evaluation.
